Since 1990, 1 in 9: The Long Island Breast Cancer Action Coalition has been committed to fighting the cancer epidemic through education, outreach, environmental advocacy, spearheading changes to legislation affecting cancer issues. 1 in 9's Hewlett House opened to the public in 2001. Located at 86 E. Rockaway Road in Hewlett NY, it lies beyond a white picket fence and although it looks like an ordinary house; little do people know of the strength within.
1in 9's Hewlett House is a non-profit community learning resource center open to the public. The goal of The Hewlett House is to provide patients and their families a free, warm and welcoming place to obtain resources and education and a safe haven for those whose lives have been by touched by cancer. We offer a place to come together, network and receive information.
The community concept is the cornerstone of our philosophy. It is within this framework that we can begin to eliminate the social isolation, despair and hopelessness experienced by people with cancer, their family and friends; and offer them intelligent choices and self-confidence.
Hewlett House provides means of establishing ties with people going through similar experiences. Through friendship and socialization, Hewlett House enables individuals to live richer lives.
Hewlett House is open to all who enter without referral and at no cost. It provides an innovative and creative approach to the overall needs of patients and their families and friends. Hewlett House offers the basic components of therapy and support, education, and social events.
Through fostering public and private partnerships, we help raise awareness of Hewlett House which enables us to raise money to support our on-going programs.
The Hewlett House is wheelchair accessible and contains a reception area, rooms for individual and group sessions, dining room, living room, library-learning center, administrative offices, a film/video room and even a meditation room. Even private counseling is also available by appointment.

Geri Barish, Executive Director
Hewlett House fulfills a dream that Geri Barish, Executive Director of Hewlett House and President of 1 in 9: The Long Island Breast Cancer Action Coalition, had while battling breast cancer.
She is a three-time breast cancer survivor and activist whose oldest son, Michael, died in 1986 from complications of Hodgkins Lymphoma.
Geri has been in the forefront in the battle against the high incidence of cancer on Long Island since 1988, and has spearheaded major changes to local, state and federal legislation, resulting in new policies that positively impact people with cancer, help to clean up toxins in our environment and take greater steps towards finding cancer’s causes and cure.
Geri vowed a long time ago that, given the opportunity, she would ensure that no one would have to go through what she had gone through – battling this dreadful disease alone.
Grounds and Gardens
The grounds and gardens are a very important component of Hewlett House. They will be a celebration of life. The grounds are ideal for maintaining growth that is indigenous to Long Island and requires no chemical applications. All of the gardens and grounds of Hewlett House are organic. Lectures and workshops focus on protecting the environment, alternatives to pesticide use, cancer mapping, water and air pollution and other concerns.
